Just added to the TED2014 lineup…

New-speakers-3.12.14 TED2014 begins in five short days, and we have added even more new speakers to look forward to. Below, a bit about each one:

Cellist and beatboxer Kevin Olusola from Pentatonix (swoon!) will open Session 1: The Next Chapter. And as a bonus in Session 1, we’ll be honoring TED’s co-founder, Richard Saul Wurman.

In Session 6: Wired, planet detective Jeremy Kasdin has been added to the program. This aerospace engineer uses some very cool orbiting instruments to help in the hunt for other habitable planets. He’ll talk about a fascinating tool called the “starshade.”

In Session 7: Why, writer Elizabeth Gilbert will offer a followup from her blockbuster 2009 talk, “Your elusive creative genius.” This time, Gilbert will tell her story post-Eat, Pray, Love and share what she learned about how success often chases the tail of failure.

Fast-Growing 2U Files For $100M IPO, But Is It Poised To Be The Next Big Education Company?

When 2U emerged in 2008, online education was still struggling to be taken seriously. Despite steadily increasing online enrollment, many remained skeptical. Both fairly and unfairly, online education was seen as a world of simple micro-correspondence courses, limited in quality, incapable of producing outcomes truly commensurate with on-campus education and therefore merely a supplement, not a replacement, to traditional learning.

First as 2Tor, now as 2U, the company has been on a mission to lift online education up by the bootstraps and give universities the tools and resources they need to build out online extensions of their on-campus courses and programs. Six-years later, the work appears to be paying off for the young education technology company, as it filed paperwork with the SEC this weekend, officially declaring its intention to go public.

The company has yet to determine how many shares will be offered nor the price range…
